Stepping in Front of the Camera: A Photographer’s Perspective on Motherhood Sessions

A Photographer Motherhood Session from the perspective of a photographer. Stepping in front of the camera for a motherhood session was an eye-opening experience. It reminded me why I cherish capturing these moments for other moms.

A Motherhood Session

Experiencing my own motherhood session firsthand was a powerful reminder of why I’m so passionate about capturing these moments for my clients. As a photographer, I’m always behind the lens, focusing on creating timeless images for others—but this experience gave me a fresh perspective. From choosing the perfect outfit to embracing the joy of simply being present with my daughter, I was reminded of the beauty and importance of motherhood sessions. Here’s a glimpse into my session, the lessons I learned, and why every mom deserves to be in the frame.

Choosing to Stay on Brand—And Learning from It

When I first planned for my session with reveriephotographyllc.com, I was going to keep it simple—blue jeans and a white button-up. It’s classic, effortless, and easy. But as I thought about it, I realized something important: If I encourage my clients to dress up for their sessions, why wouldn’t I do the same? I also wanted to stay true to my brand, which is about creating elegant, timeless images that feel elevated and special.

So, I turned to my own style guide—the very one I send to my clients—and used it to make my decision. I chose a flowy pink and white polka-dot ankle-length dress with bell sleeves, and my daughter wore a sheer handkerchief dress with a beaded waistband, paired with a knit top that matched the pink in my dress. Not only did we coordinate beautifully, but I also felt more confident and put together. Dresses have a way of flattering and enhancing, and I wanted to make sure I looked my best.

And that’s something I want my clients to take away—you deserve to feel beautiful in your photos. Taking a little extra time to dress up can transform the way you see yourself in your images.

The Experience of a Photographers Motherhood Session

From the moment we stepped into the session, the atmosphere was relaxed and inviting. There was soft posing guidance—just enough to help us look natural while still feeling at ease. One of the best parts? Knowing that I didn’t have to worry about whether we were in focus, in frame, or perfectly posed. For once, I could simply enjoy the moment with my daughter.

She, of course, loved twirling in her dress and the freedom to dance, and I loved watching her joy unfold in front of the camera. It was a rare and beautiful moment of just being together, fully present, and I knew we’d cherish these images for years to come.

Photographer Motherhood Session Gallery

When I received my gallery, I couldn’t help but smile. There’s something truly special about seeing yourself in the kind of images you love creating for others. I immediately had a few favorites and clicked that heart without hesitation.

Looking at the images, I was reminded of why I love photographing family sessions—especially Mother’s Day minis. There’s an irreplaceable magic in capturing the love between a mother and her child. It’s a connection that deserves to be documented, celebrated, and held onto forever.

Branding Photos for Royal Diamond Photography

Reeve also captured some branding images for me, which I now use on my website. While her editing style differs from my signature light and airy look, the photos still reflect the professionalism and warmth I want my clients to experience when they connect with Royal Diamond Photography. And let’s be honest I love them.

The Lesson I Want Every Mom to Know

Being in front of the camera also brought out my own insecurities. Like many moms, I had to quiet that little voice in my head that focused too much on my flaws. But then I reminded myself: I took the time to dress up, to be intentional, to create something beautiful with my daughter. And I looked good. More importantly, I looked happy.

Moms, we are often our own worst critics. But our children don’t see our imperfections. They see love, warmth, and the person who makes their world feel safe and whole.

So, if you’re hesitating about booking a session, I encourage you—step in front of the camera. Dress up. Be present. These are the moments you’ll want to hold onto, and they deserve to be captured beautifully.

We are doing our “A Mother’s Love in Bloom” Mother’s Day Mini Sessions soon so get on the waiting list here.
