First I want to tell you that where you are located can determine the best time for Fall Family Photos.
Choose whether or not you will be doing a fall mini-session or a full session. If you are choosing a full session, make sure you don’t wait too long. The perfect time is before the leaves have started to fall, but they are bright in color. Use a local fall foliage prediction map. Mid-October is the prime time. Book your favorite photographer early. This is a busy time for them and their availability is limited.
If you need help to decide between the two here is a blog that breaks down a mini-session.
The outfits. In August and early September, you will start seeing the fall line come on the shelves in earnest. Coordinating colors without matching too much is key. Choose lighter tones, jewel tones, or neutrals/whites. Avoid colors, such as bright red and darker colors or busy patterns, it will help bring all the attention to your face and let the eye focus on the moments with your family. The camera loves shades of white and pops of color, mixed with sophisticated colors like heather gray, creams, and navy. Also, use me if you want!! I love helping families pick out colors and what to wear to their sessions.

Planning your day. ALLOW YOURSELF MORE TIME THAN YOU THINK YOU’LL ACTUALLY NEED!!! When you’re planning “getting ready” time before your session (scheduling your hair, makeup, etc.) please give yourself a lot more time than you think you’ll need. Make sure to account for things like traffic, getting lost, and parking, so you can prevent unnecessary stress, arrive a few minutes early to your session, and be ready to start on time. I’m only able to shoot when light is still in the sky, so we’ll want to take advantage of every minute we have together before the sun goes down!

The camera smiles game. Ok here is a little game you can play with your kiddos. Have your kiddo say cheese. The teeth end up clenched. Have them say “me” or words that end with the “ee” sound. Eliminate the “s” and see how the smile becomes more relaxed.
