Something I do whenever I’m out with my mom friends.
I make it a point to get a photo of mom with her kids. At the river. On the walk. At the park.
Not because anyone asked.
Because I know she’s the one who has been taking all the photos all morning. I know her camera roll is full of her kids’ faces and her husband’s laugh, and the dog running ahead on the trail.
And I know that when she gets home and scrolls back through the day, she won’t be in a single one.
Even as a family photographer in the Black Hills — the one whose whole work is about capturing stories — I still find myself on the wrong side of the camera more than I’d like.
I still have to remind my husband. I still feel that quiet ache for a friend who just… notices. And picks up the phone and takes a photo without being asked.
So when I’m with my mom friends, I try to BE that friend.
Here’s what I know after photographing families across the Black Hills of South Dakota and Wyoming: the mom is almost never in the photos.
She’s in the planning. She’s in the packing of snacks and the wrangling of shoes and the “everyone look at the camera.” She is everywhere — and somehow, nowhere to be found in the frame.
And years from now, when your kids look back at outdoor family photos from when they were little — the lakeside sessions, the meadow afternoons, the high country light on their faces — they are going to want to see you there too.
Not just the memory of you making it happen. You.
This is a big part of why I do what I do as a natural light family photographer in the Black Hills.
Yes, I’m here to make beautiful images. Yes, I want your kids to look cute and your family to feel relaxed and the golden hour light to do that thing it does over the Wyoming hills.
But more than any of that, I want you to have proof.
Proof that you were there. That you were in it. That you were present and laughing and holding someone’s hand and looking at the people who love you most.
You deserve to be in the story too. Not just documenting it. Not just watching it.
In it.
If you’ve ever felt this — save this and send it to a mom who needs to hear it. 💛
And if you’re ready to actually get yourself back in the frame, that’s exactly what I help families do — right here in the Black Hills of South Dakota and Wyoming, and in Aberdeen, SD.
Both through my lens and through yours.
